I admit I’m late to catch on to the capsule wardrobe trend, but I’ve been researching it more recently. While I already practice something similar, I believe it could be useful for those wanting to refresh their wardrobe without breaking the bank. As I delved into information on capsule wardrobes, I discovered various approaches. Personally, I am intrigued by The Vivienne Files‘ 4×4 method. Let’s explore what this process entails!
Imagine a grid with four columns and four rows. The initial row should consist of essential items, such as two tops (one ideally being a jacket or cardigan) and two bottoms in a neutral shade. Moving on to the second row, repeat the same template but with a different neutral color. The third row introduces four tops, allowing for the inclusion of colors and patterns that complement the items in the first two rows. The final row should contain at least two tops, along with either a pair of bottoms or a dress. I’ve included an example below for the spring season.

Black trench coat Black tank Black slacks Black skirt
Camel blazer White tee Tan trousers Black joggers
There are numerous ways to mix and match these items. Building your wardrobe can be an enjoyable journey. Spice it up by incorporating a color scheme or having separate capsules for work and casual wear, if you have the space. This approach lets you unleash your creativity and simplifies the task of choosing outfits daily, while also saving money with versatile core pieces.
