If you’re new here, check out part one of my healthy habits journey.
The previous week had its highs and lows. I made the decision to eliminate any foods containing high levels of added sugar. Although I have never smoked, walking down the candy aisle felt like what it must be like for a smoker trying to avoid a smoke shop. It has been a challenge for me to resist consuming these unhealthy foods.
How it started
To prepare for the week ahead, I packed my lunches on Sunday night. This has been an effective method for me to stick to my dietary goals in the past. I prefer using glass containers with airtight lids and dividers to keep my food fresh. With these containers, I can easily grab a pre-made meal along with some greens and be ready to eat within 5 minutes. According to the National Library of Medicine, evidence suggests that meal planning is linked to improved adherence to nutritional recommendations and a wider range of food choices.1
What I did
I enjoy making my own salads using a lean protein and various toppings. One of my go-to salads is a replica of Panera’s Strawberry Poppyseed salad.
For my salad, I typically use baby spinach, whatever fruits I have on hand, reduced-fat blue cheese crumbles, grilled chicken, and this dressing. (Feel free to add your favorite nuts, but be cautious of extra calories and fat intake.)
What I Noticed
The biggest change I noticed was a significant improvement in my regularity. It’s truly remarkable what fiber and good nutrients can do for you!
The second change I observed was a heightened sense of satiety. I would complete my salad feeling satisfied, rather than overly stuffed with fat and processed carbohydrates.
Lastly, my concentration improved. Whether this was a direct result of eating salads regularly or not, I’m uncertain. I hope this was my body’s way of signaling that it appreciated the nutrients I had previously been withholding. Time will reveal the answer.
Conclusion
On Friday, I missed my daily salad because I was caught up with chores and work. By the time I realized I hadn’t eaten lunch, it was almost dinner time. My husband and I decided to head to our favorite local bar for Fish Friday. Could I have had a side salad with my meal? Absolutely. Would I have been able to have my salad before leaving the house? Yes, I could. But sometimes plans change, and you just go with the flow. All in all, I’m confident I can maintain this habit, especially with meal prepping.
I’m already in week two! Come back next week to see how it’s going!
